POV: your child says they don’t like the meal before the plate even hits the table.

⬇️Here’s what to do, from a Registered Nutritionist.

1️⃣Firstly - calm the situation. Getting into a battle over it simply won’t help. Don’t react angrily or get upset or complain! Take a big deep breath if you need to…

2️⃣Secondly - say something consistent each time, like “that’s ok, you don’t have to eat it”…

3️⃣Thirdly - sit down with them at the table & eat your own food - this is key…if you’re not sitting and eating with them, you’re not modelling to them how you want them to eat & behave at mealtimes & so it’ll be very hard for them to learn.

4️⃣Fourth - avoid talking about the food anymore. Take the focus off what’s being eaten & ask them about their day, or talk about something that will interest them AND ideally help them want to stay at the table.

A few other things you can do to help:
🌟React the same way each time
🌟Have some well accepted sides with the meal e.g. potatoes or peas that they can still eat
🌟Don’t force them to stay at the table, but try to focus on helping them to want to be there by keeping it calm & enjoyable.
🌟Prep them BEFORE the meal - give them a 10 or 5 min warning that food will start & have a little tidy up before the meal - do this consistently so they start to learn when to expect meals.

There is so much more I could say - but try these steps above ⬆️ when this next happens to you.

🥑🥦 This is what you need to know if you’re weaning right now and struggling with finger foods!!🍌🥕

⬆️This is one of the top questions I get about weaning! And I know why…it can feel like a really tricky step & finger foods are quite daunting (they were for me when I was weaning too!)

‼️But here’s my biggest piece of advice: don’t put it off! 🙏

👶🏼Babies learn to eat through plenty of practice! They need that hands-on practice with different shapes and textures to get better and more efficient. Offering finger foods early on helps with exactly this.

👏🏼I know it’s nerve-wracking (I’ve been there!), but it’s all about a gentle progression.

🥰To make it easier, I’ve got a detailed blog breaking down the how-to and gives you a simple structure for progressing through textures.

⭐️ Want the guide? Comment “finger food progress” below, and I’ll DM you the link RIGHT NOW!

This one thing really does make food refusal more likely…😢😱🤷🏼‍♀️

🖊️Type PRESSURE to get my blog on what to do when your little one is refusing a meal!

✋🏿❌Pressure to eat - in whatever forms e.g.

Some gentle coaxing…
Telling them it’s “yummy”
Playing a game to get them to eat
Bribing them with pudding
Begging them to try it
Telling them that the have to eat something
Asking them to have one more spoonful
Shouting at them
Tricking them by saying daddy is going to eat their food…

😇We’ve all done many of these things…
And some may actually help sometimes…but more often than not, these will feel like PRESSURE to eat up!

⬇️Pressure to eat actually reduces appetites.

🧐Many of the families I work with have tried everything to get their little ones to eat. But often (not always)…there is still some form of pressure going on around the table making kids NOT want to eat!

❓What can you do:
Focus on the way your are reacting FIRST.
Stay calm
Practise: do as I do, not as I say
Offer small portions
Offer sides they accept
Make mealtimes an enjoyable place to be

Start there ⬆️

Hope this helps 🌟
